The many facets of Pele

Pele is understood by some to be a mythological being who lives in tales but who has no material reality. Some call her a deity, a word imbued with layered and loaded meanings. Some acknowledge her as a daughter of Haumea, the Female Principle from whom many aspects of the Earthly realm were born. Some know her as Tutu Pele, Grandmother Earth; as Pelehonuamea, the keeper of the Earth. Certain Hawaiians consider Pele a blood ancestor and themselves descendants in her line; others not of her blood know her as a spiritual ancestor. I know her as a cultural and universal energy alive and well, active and operative, in today’s world.
